The King’s Curve: The Royal Cadillac Incident and Carl XVI Gustaf’s Mishap

On the southern outskirts of Stockholm lies Kungens kurva – the place where Gustav V’s driver Gösta Ledin lost control of the royal Cadillac in 1946. The king and the car ended up in the ditch.

Now Djurgården’s sports manager Bosse Andersson reveals that Gustav V’s great-grandson, Sweden’s current king Carl XVI Gustaf, also had a curve named after him.

In Fördomspodden, Andersson explains that the king hunted annually in Andersson’s home village of Rö outside Rimbo. One winter day, the accident happened.

– He drove off the road on his way to the hunt. It was a bit slippery and snowy. But it went well, says Andersson in the podcast.

Andersson: “Big in the village”

The curve was named King’s curve in the mouths of the Rö population.

Bosse Andersson tells Expressen that the drama took place sometime in the late 70s or early 80s.

– There was some narrow forest road there. It was snow, he went down the ditch in a curve. He stuck to a bit. That’s why we called it the King’s curve, he says.

You hunted with him several times – did you talk? Did he say anything about the curve?

– I guess we didn’t talk that much. I was a pushover. It was quite fun and a great pride in the village. It was big when the king came to the village, Andersson says.

Expressen has contacted the royal house for a comment.
