JAKARTA – Vocabulary the king is on the endangered species list. This beautiful animal with orange-black wings is becoming less and less in number on Earth.
“The numbers are getting smaller and this is very worrying,” said Stuart Pimm, an ecologist at Duke University, quoted from CBC, Friday (22/7/2022).
In fact, said Pimm, the monarch butterfly is the most famous type of butterfly in the world, one of which is because of the beauty of its wings.
This endangered status, issued by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Prior to the monarch butterfly, in 2016 the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada designated the monarch butterfly as an endangered species.
The IUCN itself estimates that the current monarch butterfly population, especially in North America, has declined drastically, between 22 and 72 percent over the past 10 years. Figures may vary depending on the measurement method.
“We are very concerned about the decline in the number of monarch butterflies,” said Nich Haddad, a conservation biologist at Michigan State University.
“It’s easy to imagine how quickly this butterfly is being threatened,” he added.
It is known, Haddad did make specific observations on the monarch butterfly.
According to his observations, since 1990 the monarch butterfly has become increasingly rare in the wild, its population declining between 85 and 95 percent in the Eastern United States.
“The decline in the number of monarch butterflies in the wild is very painful. Over the past 30 years, the number of monarch butterflies has continued to decline, and is now in danger of extinction,” said Karen Oberhauser, an American conservation biologist who has specifically studied monarch butterflies. .
