The King of Complaints in Sing Tao | Frequent traffic accidents claim two lives every week and directly attack jaywalking police to enforce the law in Hong Kong in December

The road is like a tiger’s mouth, and the number of deaths due to jaywalking, especially among the elderly, is on the rise. According to figures from the Police Traffic Headquarters, fatal traffic accidents have increased this year compared with the same period last year. “Sing Tao Complaint King” visited many districts in Hong Kong and found that it is very common for Hong Kong people to cross the road jaywalking. Even if they are a family, using crutches or pushing wheelchairs, they will not worry about safety. Even if they see a red light, they will cross the road. .

The host of “Sing Tao Complaint King” asked citizens who jaywalked on the road why they jaywalked. Some neighbors said that they were familiar with the light signal changes in the area. They knew that when the first road lights up with “Green Doll”, the other side will soon change from red to green, and they are used to crossing two roads in one go. Another neighbor said that he misread the light signal and knew that the road was like a tiger’s mouth, so he hurriedly apologized. It has been observed that many of the pedestrians jaywalking on the road are elderly.

Chief Inspector Lam Kai-sum of the Traffic Headquarters (Road Safety) of the Police Force told “Sing Tao Complaint King” about the trend of traffic accidents this year. He pointed out that from January to September this year, a total of 75 fatal traffic accidents occurred in Hong Kong, an increase of 21% compared to the same period last year. On average, two people lost their lives due to traffic accidents every week.

It is worth noting that 68%, or 51, of the fatalities in traffic accidents involved pedestrians, and 31 were elderly people over the age of 65, reflecting that elderly pedestrians are still the most vulnerable group in traffic accidents.

Violators of another ticket control operation in December will be fined NT$2,000.

In view of the fact that more than half of fatal traffic accidents involve pedestrians, the police launched a territory-wide large-scale law enforcement operation in the third quarter of 2023 to ticket pedestrians for violations. The relevant number increased by 44% compared with the same period last year. In December, the police will carry out similar enforcement actions again, and citizens caught with tickets will face fines of up to NT$2,000. Lin Qisen reiterated that “fines are a small matter, but protecting lives is a big deal.” He hoped that through these actions, he would raise public awareness of road safety.

He continued that the causes of traffic accidents are concentrated in several aspects: passers-by are mainly impatient and greedy for convenience, have a lucky mentality, and underestimate the speed and distance of the vehicle. There are also passers-by who enter the vehicle’s blind spot due to “car donation”. Drivers are mainly responsible for lack of caution, lack of concentration and lack of blind spot awareness.

The police found that as many as 4:3 pedestrian offenders still ran off the road when the pedestrian traffic light was in the “red doll” state. Furthermore, even if the footbridge is within easy reach, pedestrians have given up using it. Lin Qisen described these irresponsible behaviors as seriously affecting the safety of other road users.

Pedestrians or drivers who ignore road safety may receive a painful lesson in return. The head of Team 1 of the Hong Kong Island Regional Special Traffic Accident Investigation Team, Wu Man-chong, made a safety appeal to the public after summarizing some of the fatal cases this year. “When driving, drivers should pay extra attention to blind spots and road conditions to ensure safety around the vehicle. Pedestrians must make good use of pedestrian crossing facilities. Do not abandon pedestrian crossings because of convenience, wanting to skip two steps or fear of waiting for a while. Crossing facilities.”

“Sing Tao Complaint King” will later launch two episodes of traffic special topics, including inviting police psychologists to analyze the mentality of offenders and traffic accident victims, and government chemists to analyze the potential risks to pedestrian safety caused by blind spots in car accidents. . As for the latest traffic information, the police appeal to the public to pay attention to various messages posted online by the police’s road safety mascot “Sir Bear”.
