Minimalist songs, maximum emotions

Scratchy guitar riffs, simple drum beats and Alison Mosshart’s haunting voice. That’s all it takes to make it clear: The Kills are special. The career of the duo from London began more than 20 years ago with the Black Rooster EP. Singer Alison Mosshart and guitarist Jamie Hince are quickly making a name for themselves with their quirky mix of garage and blues rock. At times they are treated as the new White Stripes or even as the saviors of British rock music. Above all, their courage for minimalism, their spartan lo-fi sound sets The Kills apart from comparable acts. Her eccentric stage presence — wearing sunglasses and chain-smoking — certainly doesn’t tarnish her reputation either.

The Kills are back

A lot has happened since the beginning of the band. The Kills have meanwhile completed extensive tours and stadium concerts as a support act for Metallica or Guns n’ Roses. Also released five albums and a few more EPs. Since their last album “Ash and Ice”, however, the duo has been quiet. After a seven-year break, the band is back with two new songs. “New York” and „LA Hex“ connect to the classic sound qualities of the duo, but also enter new territory. You can hear the emotions Alison Mosshart went through while writing the songs in the pop filter.

By the way: In 2017 The Kills were guests at the detector.fm studio. At the time they just celebrated their 15th band anniversary and tell us why they still get stage fright when they go on stage. Here’s the interview.
