After the beautiful dialogue between quintets of the first concert of the Clefs de Saint-Pierre season, other musicians from the Orchester national du Capitole decide to pay homage, this November 27, to British music of the 20th century. Another special instrumental quintet, this time composed of an oboe and a string quartet (two violins, a viola and a cello) features some rare works by composers from across the Channel who are little known. Discovery is on the agenda.
Among the four composers who are included in the program for this concert, two of them have a certain notoriety. They are Sir Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan-Williams. From the first, the big ones Variations Enigma as well as the very popular anthem in England Pomp and Circumstance made them famous. The second is the prolific author of numerous works (notably operas and no less than 9 symphonies) and the beautiful orchestral piece The Lark Ascending is sometimes given in concert.
By Sir Edward Elgar, we will be able to hear the String Quartet in E minor opus 83. Composed in 1918, it was premiered on May 21, 1919 at Wigmore Hall in London. Another string quartet, No. 2 in A minor by Ralph Vaughan-Williams, will also be played. It was composed in 1942-43, at the request of violist Jean Stewart. The viola part is thus particularly highlighted.
The other two composers did not acquire the same fame. Ernest John Moeran (1894-1950), son of an Irish clergyman, was greatly influenced by English and Irish popular music, which he collected assiduously. His “Fantasy Quartett” for oboe, violin, viola and cello, which will be played on November 27, dates from 1946. As for Arthur Bliss (1891-1975), he first became known for his modern compositions and not conventional, but he quickly returned to more traditional and romantic forms. His compositions include not only concert pieces, but also film soundtracks and a ballet. His Quintet for oboe and string quartet F. 21, which dates from 1927, will be performed in Toulouse perhaps for the first time!
The five musicians of the Orchester national du Capitole who will be the ambassadors of these “so British” scores are Chi Yuen Cheng, oboe, Vitaly Rasskazov and Romance Leroy, violins, Joyce Blanco-Lewis, viola, and Aurore Dassesse, cello
Les Clefs de Saint-Pierre offers us a great opportunity to open our sensitivity to composers from across the Channel of the 20th century.
