This international quartet unites musicians from Germany, the Netherlands and Latvia. Its members include saxophonist Kārlis Auziņš and cellist Maija Fridmane (Maya Friedman) double bassist Andris Mainigs (Andris Meinig) un pianists Keno Harihauzens (Keno Harriehausen). The quartet’s unusual choice of instrument combinations is more a contemporary chamber music ensemble than a jazz band. Pianist and composer Keno Harryhausen is interested in atypical jazz formats, and the quartet is also a vivid example of an ensemble of musicians, in which the individual voice and the multifaceted sum of an indivisible whole have found their most complete embodiment.
Kārlis Auziņš, a musician of the Keno Harihausen Quartet, Latvian contemporary jazz and improvised music saxophonist, composer, who was nominated for the Great Music Award in 2022 for outstanding performance throughout the year, is better known in Latvia. Having graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory and the Copenhagen Conservatory of Rhythmic Music, he is currently active on various Latvian, European and Scandinavian jazz and contemporary music stages. Kārlis Auziņš is also known from such projects as Oatmeal. Chudar. Arutyunyan, Kārlis Aužinas Quartet and Mount Meander.
German music journalist and writer Wolf Kampmann (Wolf Kampmann) admits that “each of the musicians of the quartet at any moment intuitively feels where his place is and what role he plays in this flexible musical whole. In addition, even in moments of greater freedom, they do not get stuck somewhere in their improvisation. All four musicians know exactly not only where they are going want to go, but also that they will actually get there. They stay very precisely within the boundaries of their music and do not allow any ideas from the outside world to distract them. No matter how high the degree of complexity the quartet’s music reaches, everything in it develops according to a very natural logic”.
