For Jack Schlossberg, the cup was full. President John F. Kennedy’s only grandson has followed his cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign for the Democratic nomination with growing dismay.
For Schlossberg, the challenge launched by his cousin to Joe Biden has no other purpose than to “to flatter one’s vanity” and comes to tarnish the legacy of his grandfather and their family. A few days earlier, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a follower of conspiracy theories, had claimed that the virus at the origin of Covid-19 had been designed to spare Ashkenazi Jews and the Chinese.
“His candidacy is a disgrace”
From a van in Australia, where he was on vacation, Schlossberg posted a video on Instagram where he doesn’t mince words about his cousin: “He uses Camelot [surnom donné à la présidence de John F. Kennedy et par extension, à tout le clan], fame, conspiracy theories to put themselves in the spotlight and serve their own interests. I don’t see who could want him to be president. All I know is that his candidacy is a disgrace.”
Schlossberg’s words reflect the turmoil that is shaking what remains of the myth of Camelot and the Kennedy clan. Bobby, the nickname given to 69-year-old Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has become a source of concern for his many brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews, testing the ties of the “royal family” of the American politics.
The vast majority don’t want him running for president, don’t support his campaign, and find his conspiratorial ramblings ridiculous. And almost everyone has a great admiration for Joe Biden, a longtime friend of the family.
“Never has the clan been so torn”
However, while some of Bobby’s parents feel compelled to disavow his campaign, others are deeply pained to see their differences exposed. They don’t share Bobby’s views, especially his anti-vax stances, but they have affection for him and don’t think it’s worth publicly criticizing him.
“I love my brother very much.insiste Courtney Kennedy Hill, and although I disagree with him on a number of issues, I refuse to lynch him.” “He did a lot of good to a lot of people”, she adds, alluding to her work as a lawyer specializing in environmental law and her work to help people suffering from drug addiction.
The clan has never been so torn. In all the scandals and tragedies that have followed over the years, the Kennedys’ rule of thumb has always been to support each other no matter what. The key word was solidarity. But Bobby, to whom the polls grant 15% of voting intentions
