The episodic meeting of the SYRIZA Parliamentary Group ended shortly after 11 pm on Tuesday with Stefanos Kasselakis, who participated online from Chania, anointing the party’s number two Nikos Pappa, giving him the role of the head of the Parliamentary Group. However, the Kasselakis suggestion provoked the reaction of the former head of the Parliamentary Group, Sokratis Famellos, who initially refused to leave, requesting that a motion of censure be filed against him and that the statutory procedure be followed.
After many hours of deliberation, he backtracked on this stance, urging the rest of the caucus to vote against the president’s proposal.
Finally, the Kasselakis proposal was voted with 17 in favor, 12 against and 4 present.
The proposal that was put to a vote includes the following changes: Nikos Pappas, president of K.O., Giorgos Gavrilos, Yiannis Sarakiotis and Nina Kasimati are proposed as parliamentary representatives.
Iota Poulou is proposed as coordinator of the sector heads and Rallia Christidou as deputy coordinator. On the contrary, Theodora Tzakri is saved and remains in the position of K.O.’s secretary.
What does the choice Papa signify?
According to the Vimas report, by allying with Nikos Pappas and further strengthening his presence in the internal party system, Stefanos Kasselakis is trying to overcome the intense internal party controversy. His decision to appoint the former parliamentary representative, head of the Parliamentary Group is a clear indication that he is looking for supports in the party.
The former minister a year ago gave him a political helping hand, supporting him in the second round of the elections. St. Kasselakis recognized this and essentially anointed Nikos Pappa as No. 2 in the party. It now gives him more vital political space, a move that has further angered the Tsipras bloc, the “87” and others who disagree with St. Kasselakis.
The replacement of Sokratis Famellos by Nikos Pappas was indeed an expected move for the insiders as Stefanos Kasselakis is looking for allies to prevent a possible impeachment motion by Pavlos Polakis or even the 87.
The Kasselakis message
At the same time, Stefanos Kasselakis sent a message that he is not leaving and asked that practically everyone, those who question him, commit publicly that they are not going to leave to any “new body” without popular legitimation.
“It is clear: Whoever attempts to deprive SYRIZA of the position of official opposition that the Greek people gave it in the 2023 elections and reaffirmed in the 2024 European elections, will commit the greatest democratic crime: The alteration of the citizens’ vote in terms of the parliamentary party representation. And it will bear the stamp forever. Not by me. From the Greek people,” he emphasized.
