The Journey of Kirsten: Overcoming Severe Itching and Discovering Prurigo Nodularis

Itch

It all started a year ago when Kirsten got severe itching on her legs. The constant scratching kept her awake at night, causing her to sleep only four hours a day. She went to the dermatologist, who assumed it was an allergy. “Unfortunately the itching did not go away. During a trip to Paris the pain became unbearable. My legs turned red from scratching and the itching turned into pain. I suspected there was more going on, so I consulted the dermatologist again.” A biopsy was performed, during which doctors removed a piece of tissue. According to the research, Kirsten has the skin condition Prurigo Nodularis. “Although I had blood drawn, the specific cancer I had could not be detected through blood tests. We therefore assumed that the skin condition was the cause of my itching,” she says.

Kirsten decided to sound the alarm again when the itching had still not disappeared after three months. “The dermatologist was convinced that the skin condition was the cause. He asked me if I had experienced anything major recently. The only thing that came to mind was that my grandmother had recently passed away, but I didn’t understand the connection.” Kirsten was referred to a psychologist who explained that unpleasant events can worsen the itching. Still, she was convinced there was more to it. “I also requested a second opinion, but that was refused. When I look back, I think it’s a shame how the dermatologist acted, but of course he’s only human.” After months of not finding a solution, she saw a new dermatologist who was willing to do further research. Kirsten was prescribed a drug that weakened her immune system, causing a bump to appear above her collarbone.
