This is a video of the 1985 U.S. Congress climate change hearing.
The 37-year-old senator who led the hearing said:
[앨 고어/미국 상원의원]
“I am shocked that there is no longer any disagreement among climatologists that the greenhouse effect is real. Future generations may experience science fiction becoming reality.″
But the world did not take climate change seriously until the late 1980s.
In just over 10 years, the situation has changed dramatically.
The Earth’s temperature rose noticeably, and the Kyoto Protocol, the first climate change agreement, was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997.
Al Gore is seen attending as Vice President of the United States.
Former Chancellor Merkel, who was Germany’s Minister of Environment at the time, said this.
″Both developed and developing countries have shown the world that they take global warming seriously and see it as a problem of common survival.″
Former Vice President Al Gore Documentary <불편한 진실>He won the Academy Award for , and the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year.
The young senator from 38 years ago has now transformed into a world-class environmental activist and visited Korea again this year.
I asked him what kind of country Korea was in his eyes.

″Korea is one of the few countries in the world where solar and wind power is more expensive than coal and gas power.″
This is actually something we didn’t know much about.
We asked a global market research agency if this was true.
The yellow countries are the countries with the cheapest solar power generation, and the light blue countries are the countries with the cheapest wind power.
Wind power is the cheapest in the US, Canada, China and the UK.
Australia, France and India have the cheapest solar energy.
Korea and Indonesia are red.
Among the 50 countries surveyed, Korea is still the rare country where coal power generation is the cheapest.

“In 96% of global power markets, renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels. Korea is a rare country in the 4% that cannot keep up with this global trend.″
The reason for this is said to be the small scale of renewable energy generation facilities and regulations on the electricity market.
Former Vice President Al Gore says, however, that the domestic situation will soon change as renewable energy prices continue to fall globally.
“Once electricity from renewable sources becomes significantly cheaper than fossil fuels, a big change will occur. This is because it is economically more beneficial for entrepreneurs to switch to cheaper renewable energy.″
Former Vice President Al Gore says Korea’s rapid transition away from fossil fuel dependence has two additional benefits.
Fine dust and energy security.
″Korea is one of the countries with a serious fine dust problem. Every year, many people die from fine dust. There are additional benefits to not burning dirty fossil fuels.″
They say that the energy security of our country, which imports a huge amount of oil and gas, can also be strengthened.
Even in our country, renewable energy is becoming significantly cheaper than fossil fuels.
I asked when that time would be.
A full price reversal is expected to occur between 2028 and 2029.
This is the price of solar power this year.
It is analyzed as a minimum of $72 to $140 per megawatt hour, or approximately 100,000 to 180,000 won in Korean money.
However, next year the maximum price will drop to $115.
It will drop to $83 in 2028.
Even the most expensive solar power costs less than the cheapest gas power.
Currently, Korea’s energy transition ranks among the lowest among OECD countries.
But once you turn, it will unleash incredible potential.
″Korea is one of the countries in the world with the most advanced battery technology. Three of the six most important battery companies are located in Korea. And the new electric cars that Korea is making are truly amazing.″
Climate change is fundamentally a crisis for humanity, but it is also a source of new wealth.
″There is a strong perception that things related to climate change or energy transition are risk factors for the economy. But I think it’s really important to see this as an opportunity. Forecasts show a $194 trillion opportunity by 2050, when net greenhouse gas emissions will reach zero.″
Former Vice President Al Gore says pessimism about climate change must be answered with action.
“I am completely confident. I’m sure we can solve it. We have the technology. The only thing lacking is political will. It can also be said that political will itself is important for renewable energy. It is important to change light bulbs (for the environment), but what is even more important is to change the policies, laws, and treaties of each country’s governments so that we can move in the right direction.”
I agree with his words that the only thing we lack right now is the will to change the world.
It was a climate environment report.
