Israeli Minister Proposes Ban on Mosque Loudspeakers, Sparking Outrage

Amidst ongoing conflict in Gaza, Israel is facing new controversy after far-right Interior Minister Ben Guir proposed a ban on the use of loudspeakers in mosques. While the minister argues the measure would address noise pollution, critics denounce it as a deliberate attempt to suppress the Muslim community and fuel religious tensions.

Guir’s office issued a statement defending the proposed ban, claiming it was not unique to Israel. “All Western countries, why even the Arab countries, have implemented laws that prohibit shouting due to noise pollution. Only in Israel has it not been implemented yet,” the statement read.

However, Mansoor Abbas, leader of the United Arab List, strongly condemned the proposal, accusing Guir of intentionally creating division. "After failing to incite riots at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Ben Guir has been targeting mosques by creating divisions. Ben Guir is always trying to destroy harmony between people," Abbas declared.

This isn’t the first time Guir has targeted mosques. In 2017, a bill known as the Muezzin Bill, which sought to ban the use of loudspeakers for religious purposes, was introduced in Parliament. The bill ultimately failed to pass after facing significant opposition.

The potential ban has ignited outrage within the Arab community, with many fearing it is an attempt to further marginalize Muslims in Israel. Critics argue that noise from mosque loudspeakers is a cultural norm and a vital part of Islamic practice.

The controversy highlights the complex and often tense relationship between Israel’s Jewish and Muslim communities. The proposed ban has raised concerns about freedom of religion and the potential for escalating divisions in an already highly charged environment.
