The Japanese Subaru WRX also received a version of the STI, but only with a continuously variable transmission

For fans of Japanese Subaru, you will no longer meet the magic letters STI in European car showrooms. Yet it was with them that Subaru unveiled two new cars – the WRX and the Levorg for the Japanese market.

However, who would look forward to a real WRX STI would be a little disappointed – the orange sedan in the photos is called the WRX S4, it is basically the same as the recently introduced American WRX and the STI is just a variant.

The WRX S4 has a 2.4-liter supercharged flat four-cylinder that offers 275 horsepower and 349 Nm. It sends them to all four wheels using a torque vectoring system, but a six-speed manual will not be available in Japan – the only one on offer is a continuously variable transmission.

The STI Sport R and STI Sport R EX equipment, which add three magic letters, differ from the lower GT-H and GT-H EX in sports seats, larger, height-oriented infotainment display, fully digital instrument panel, etc. there were some modifications to the chassis, it is not known.

In addition to moving the steering wheel to the right, it is worth mentioning one more thing that is typical of Japan – the rear wiper. The WRX is, of course, a sedan, and Japanese sedans have rear wipers at least on the domestic market, but this one has to fit in with the third brake light, so it’s not anchored in the middle of the rear window, but a little next to it.

It was probably easier than moving the third brake light to the roof of the car, but the result is a bit bizarre anyway.

The second mentioned novelty is also marked STI only as an equipment version with the whole name STI Sport R. The drive system is the same here, the equipment elements are roughly the same.

However, it is worth noting that if a Japanese customer wants a 2.4-liter turbo engine in the left-hand drive, they must choose the STI Sport R – the lower stages have a 177k supercharged 18-liter engine.

The basic WRX S4 sedan costs from 3.64 million yen (729 thousand crowns) in Japan, the top version of the WRX S4 STI Sport R EX from 4.34 million yen (869 thousand crowns). You can buy Levorg STI Sport R from 3.99 million yen (799 thousand crowns).
