The Japanese have created the most powerful batteries: they charge from 0 to 80% in 5 minutes – Hi-Tech Mail.ru

In 5 years, the first commercial product equipped with a new type of battery will appear.

The Japanese company Toshiba has created a unique lithium-ion battery with support for ultra-fast charging and extended service life. About it reports MyDrivers.

The characteristics of the new batteries are impressive. It only takes 5 minutes to charge a bulk battery from 0 to 80%. Charging to 100% does not take less than 10 minutes. For example, the realme GT5 smartphone boasts similar figures. The device charges to 100% in 10 minutes. However, if the smartphone had the latest Toshiba batteries, the phone would be able to fully charge in less than a minute.

The batteries developed by Toshiba are more durable than classic ones – after 100 charging cycles at a temperature of 60 °C, battery wear does not exceed 0.8%. For comparison, over 100 charging cycles, the iPhone battery wears out by 4-5% to 96-95%.

Toshiba says its powerful batteries can be used in both cars and compact devices, including smartphones, laptops and tablets. The first commercial product with the new batteries should appear in 2028, but it is not yet clear what kind of product it will be.

To improve the performance of a conventional lithium-ion battery, Toshiba engineers removed cobalt from the battery and created a special technology that minimizes the effects of interaction between the positive cathode and the electrolyte (a special chemical reaction that leads to battery wear). Engineers also limited the transfer of deactivated lithium ions to the surface of the negative electrode – this helped increase the performance and “survivability” of the battery.
