The International Jānis Baltvilks Prize is one of the central events in the field of literature every summer, and the brightest authors of children’s and young people’s literature and book artists will be celebrated this year on Baltvilks’ birthday.

The jury included literary scholar Ilze Stikāne, literary scholar and teacher Lita Silova, art historian and critic Aiga Dzalbe, art critic Ieva Lejasmeijere, as well as members of the public: director Kārlis Krūmiņš and the leader of the children’s vocal group “Knīpas un Knauējā”.

In order to understand what makes the books nominated this year special, “Kultūrmarks” gathered the winners, nominees, as well as the professional opinions of the jury and reviewers, and also “went on a field expedition” to book blogs, whose authors read books looking for their personal and subjective.

INTERNATIONAL LAUREATE 2021

OTHERS ARE READING NOW

French writer Delfīne de Vigāna, translator Inta Šmite, “No un es”, “Jāņa Rozes apgāds”

Ilze Stikāne: “The reader is emotionally sharp, sincere and apt to be touched by the teenager’s heightened confidence and courage to fulfill their good will – to help a woman in difficulty. The vivid portrayal of a young person’s maximalism in the face of society’s inability to successfully solve social problems has aroused a spirit of unrest in everyone. “

CHILDREN ‘S AND YOUTH’ S LITERATURE

Inese Paklone, “Latvia’s Birthday Island”, “Petergailis”

Ilze Stikāne: “Sincerely and associatively. The book is written in good language, an interesting intrigue – how to get an island? ”

In May, book blog www.domgraudi.blogspot.com author: “If there is a desire to give the island to Latvia, then each family starts talking about the island, and the first idea is that the island is in the sea or in a lake. But this time it turned out something else. An island can be a broader concept. The island can be a cake shop, then you can find island tubers, islands can be made thanks to volcanoes, and there are also island catchers. ”

Marts Pujāts, “Ej nu ej”, “Big and small”

Lita Silova: “Word games and thinking games. It is modern poetry for children. ”

Sanita Sējāne: “Each page of the book is like a different taste of ice cream. Just like a child carefully examines every small insect, spider, the author is able to go deeper and beautifully depict every detail. I want to open it from time to time and caress every open page. ”

Dzintars Tilaks, “Horror”, “Star ABC”

Ilze Stikāne: “In fact, this is the only work written in the genre of realistic storytelling.”

Daina Plūme, book blog www.pluumiitbeerns.com author: “A real adventure story – both about small stature, school failures and parents’ misunderstanding, and about mutual relationships. Several heartfelt moments. There are some instructive moments, one of which I would like to keep at the disposal of my mother and daughter’s conversation – how to settle after a dispute. “

Juris Zvirgzdins, “Captain’s Horse”, “Big and Small”

Sanita Sējāne: “There was an opportunity to catch the feelings, emotions and smells of childhood. As I read the book, the text came to life and breathed with me. ”

Signe Viška, Author of the newspaper “Konteksts”: “It is a pleasure that toys are depicted as independent thinking beings who had a life before the boy’s daily life. For example, they remember their birth or production, their departure from China. Such a perspective will stimulate the child’s imagination. It is important that things and phenomena are shown respect (the wooden horse is repainted and it looks like new!). Of course, not every toy needs to be stored, but it is important for memory and sentiment. ”

Inga Žolude, “For the first time on Earth”, “Big and small”

Lita Silova: “An original and well-chosen point of view from the child’s point of view as an alien, it was witty.”

Kārlis Krūmiņš: “Inga Žolude’s very good debut in children’s literature, witty view, teaches to understand something else, but the message is as if heard -” Strange event with a dog at night “, written by Mark Hedon.”

Ērika Bērziņa, “Mom’s poems”, “Big and small”.

Ilze Stikāne: “The mood of a full-blooded, kind family is enchanting. A caring mother and children who respond. ”

Santa Remere, Author of the portal “Satori”: “I like how Erika’s poems sometimes take sides from the path, the flow of thought or the rhythm. It is reminiscent of a record that has a scratch, fingerprint, or is easily in the mood for repeated play. It gives a real person, a sense of presence and easy carefreeness. ”

BOOK ART

Lāsma Pujāte, illustrations for Martha Pujāte’s book “Ej nu ej”, “Big and small”

Ieva Lejasmeijere: “Lāsma Pujāte’s illustrations could just as well be made into an independent exhibition. Very consistent, classic graphic technique – linocut. ”

Sanita Sējāne: “The illustrations went well with the poems, a bit unusual, but very appealing. Light blue and yellow – it attracts and soothes children. What sounds in your ears when you read Martha’s poems and see Lāsma’s illustrations? Of course, Šipsis (Jānis Šipkēvics). ”

Mārtiņš Zutis, illustrations for Juris Zvirgzdiņš ‘book “Captain’s Horse”, “Big and Small”

Ilze Stikāne: “How can you draw such a transparent world that resonates with memories !?”

Sanita Sējāne:“Glow, pastel tones and sweet dreams. While watching the illustrations, I listen to the music of Erik Eschenwald. ”

Aiga Dzalbe: “There is a desire to press the book to the heart and not let it go.”

Vivianna Maria Stanislavska, illustrations for Dace Kravale’s fairy tale “Dorabella’s Room”, “Big and Small”

Aiga Dzalbe: “Soulization – talking to the night light, answering the closet… Mottled is inside, mostly creativity throughout; bright, colorful and not banal. “

Irbe Bārbala, The author of the Facebook page “Irbe Bārbala reads and writes”: “The closet talks about order. Lamps fall in love. I would like to live in a room like Dorabella’s! ”

Anita Rupeika, illustrations for Juris Zvirgzdins’ book “Tobias and the Writer”, “Petergailis”.

Sanita Sējāne: “Bright, wide strokes of color, the book, like the illustrations, can be read in one breath, like a stream of wind.”

Evija Gulbe, writer: “Juris Zvirgzdiņš, just like the popular image of a bear Tobias, created by him, is an enthusiastic storyteller and a reliable friend of children.”

Reinis Pētersons, illustrations for Anti Sarah’s ghost “Pert sprukās”; Danil Harms’ book of poems “A Very Terrible Event”; Inese Zandere’s book-notebook “Boy with a dog”. All books – “Big and small”

Lita Silova: “For all three books illustrated by Reinis – three absolutely different and absolutely interesting works.”

Kārlis Krūmiņš: “Sarah’s book illustrations clearly add value to the book.”

Ilze Stikāne: “About the illustrations for the book of Harms: how can you come up with such precise and comically absurd images! They are very engaging and appealing. ”

Kitty Role, illustrations for Liene Bērziņa’s fairy tale “Helmet”, “Be the Bear”

Ieva Lejasmeijere: “From the point of view of book design: black and white, detailed, plot-detailed drawing. The baby boy as a vignette. ”

Aiga Dzalbe: “Completely fresh and new! The text could not exist without illustration. A subtle and exclusive book, but at the same time democratic – it encourages you to look, listen, go into the environment, study and feel everything carefully. ”

Sanita Sējāne: “I sank into the book from the first page. Also, my daughter, sorry for the patch on the cover of the book, it was seen countless times. A kind of meditative process, going into the fine details of the illustration. If I had to compare the books with the works of a particular composer, this book would definitely evoke associations with the music of Uģis Prauliņš. ”
