One year ago, on July 12, 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope took the first image of the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, over 4.5 billion light years from Earth in the constellation of the Flying Fish. In this latest image, the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is 390 light-years from Earth – the closest star-forming region to us. Due to the relatively short distance and the capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope, we can watch the birth of stars in high quality. The image shows about 50 young stars that are less or close to the mass of the Sun.

“In just one year, the James Webb Space Telescope has changed the way humanity looks at the cosmos, peering into clouds of dust and seeing light from the far reaches of the universe for the first time. Each new image is a new discovery that allows scientists around the world to ask questions and responding to ones they never dreamed of before,” commented Bill Nelson, NASA administrator.
