After a demanding 92-kilometer route, the Italian Valentina Basilico, from the Eneicat-CMteam team, took first place in the second Grand Prix of the Tour El Salvador 2024. This stage began in the Plaza Salvador del Mundo and culminated in the center of Sonsonate.
Tamara Dronova and Sylvie Swinkels, both from the Swiss team Roland, placed second and third.
The end of the race was close and preliminary records indicated that there was a platoon of 10 cyclists who recorded the same time of 2:15:15 hours, but after the corresponding analysis, the judges determined the winners.
The route that the cyclists followed in the second Grand Prix of the Tour El Salvador 2024 passed through the Monument to the Constitution towards Plaza Monseñor Romero in Quezaltepeque, then continued through the Claudia Lars roundabout, passing through the detours of Sacacoyo and Cerro Green, running through Izalco and culminating in the center of Sonsonate. The Salvadoran landscapes left the competitors admired and happy, and they also highlighted the good organization and the reception they had from the locals.
Basilico, 20 years old, at the end of the awards ceremony said he enjoyed this route more because it was shorter, but with a very even competition, with few cyclists fleeing.
“Yesterday the competition was very tough, due to the weather and the route, and the trip to El Salvador was tiring. But on the current route, the entire race was more even, since there were not as many escapes and those that did occur, did not take much distance and the peloton always absorbed them,” said Valentina.
Today’s Grand Prix champion stated that it is her first time in the country and she is enjoying each race to the fullest.
“This is my first time in El Salvador and I really liked what I saw and how warm the Salvadorans are. “I am happy to have achieved my first Grand Prix in this country,” said the Italian.
The wearer of the number 4 on her jersey indicated that although the competition awards points for the Olympic Games, for her the important thing is to achieve points for her team in the world ranking.
“What we are achieving in this Tour El Salvador is for the benefit of the team I ride for, since in my case, the Italian team has already qualified for Paris,” said Basilico.
The Grand Prix Presidente will be run today starting at 9:30 am, leaving from Plaza Salvador del Mundo and ending in Juayúa, Sonsonate.
