Italy was outraged by the video in which a well-known dancer advised women on how to behave when shopping to make them look sexy. The bizarre manual appeared in the television show Detto Fatto, which is broadcast by one of the channels of an Italian public station. According to critical reactions, he strengthened the audience in the stereotypical perception of women.
The manual, which was broadcast by the Italian public broadcaster Rai 2 as part of the Detto Fatto program, featured ballerina and dance teacher at the pole Emily Angelill. She gave women tips on how to move around the supermarket and look sensual. She put on leather mini shorts and high heels to the store.
She then showed another young woman how to walk on her heels and look seductive, even as she was pushing a shopping cart. She also advised her to reach for a pack of chips on a high shelf, defiantly lifting her leg. And there was also a tip on how to bend to the ground for fallen goods.
“I would kneel on one knee, have the other bent and my legs together, I should not stretch them so that the whole situation does not look even more vulgar,” the British newspaper quoted the dancer as saying. The Guardian.
However, Angelill was not grateful for her recommendations to Italian women. The episode of the TV show, on the other hand, caught negative reactions on social networks. Cecilia D’Elia, a spokeswoman for the Italian Conference of Democratic Women, said, for example, that she portrayed women in a stereotypical way, which should be unacceptable in the public service media.
The fact that the television broadcast the show on International Day against Violence against Women also contributed to the unfavorable response. Therefore, some viewers thought that the creators of the show had to think of the scene as a parody. The show was also strongly condemned by Italian politicians.
“High heels, sexy movements, a perfect look in every situation? How much longer will we perceive women in such a simplified way?” asked Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova on Twitter. “Perhaps instructions would be needed not on how to shop, but on how to provide a public service without trampling on the values and history of Rai TV,” said another government minister, Andrea Martella.
Rai’s CEO Fabrizio Salini suspended the program in response and ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the work. He emphasized that the episode did not correspond to the spirit of the public service and the Rai editorial code. The host of the show, Bianca Guaccero, apologized on behalf of the entire team, saying that nothing like this would happen again. Eventually, the dancer Angelill also published an apology on her Twitter account.
