The Italian luxury restaurant “Rossini” is visited every evening by regular guests who, despite their differences, have one thing in common: they are single and have long made “their” restaurant a second home.

They include a busy plastic surgeon; to all appearances a man-loving journalist; a film producer with loud jovial nature, whose overdraft facility is being smoothed out by three bankers; a poet who lives in a brothel; a beautiful woman named Valerie; a nervous allergy sufferer facing his fourth divorce; a misanthrope who only dines in a private room; the landlord – and of course the staff.
Helmut Dietl’s (1944 – 2015) social comedy “Rossini – or the murderous question of who slept with whom” was one of the most successful films of 1997 with 3.2 million cinemagoers and was awarded the German Film Prize, among other things.
Dietl’s film is full of allusions and quotes. The character of the shy author Jakob Windisch, who absolutely does not want his book made into a film, is supposed to allude to the co-author Patrick Süskind and his novel “Perfume”. And the similarities between the character of Oskar Reiter and successful producer Bernd Eichinger are probably not a coincidence.
The “Rossini” restaurant depicted in the film was modeled on the Munich restaurant “Romagna Antica”, which closed in 2010 and which counted numerous illustrious guests from the film and publishing industry and became a myth in the 1980s.
The numerous German film and television stars who appear in “Rossini” include Götz George, Mario Adorf, Heiner Lauterbach, Gudrun Landgrebe, Veronica Ferres, Joachim Król, Hannelore Hoger, Armin Rohde, Jan Josef Liefers, Martina Gedeck, Meret Becker and Edgar Selge.
