This Sunday at six in the afternoon, in the Italian league, the fight for the title will continue until the final game of the season, twelve years after the last time. The two teams from Milan play the final match with a minimum difference of two points. AC Milan has advantage and is master of his own destiny. With a draw, the championship while Inter will have to wait for the result of their neighbors: a victory does not guarantee victory, only a defeat of the current leaders would lead them to the conquest of the second consecutive national trophy.
In the era of the three points, only in six occasions the championship had been resolved on the last available date and this year it has happened again with two teams from the same city and that, after an opaque decade dominated by Juventus, are trying to return to past levels, when the trophies were distributed nationals.
On Sunday they will fight for the most desired title, the Italian league, which has seen those from Inzaghi win last year, but to find a ‘Rossonero’ win you have to go back to Allegri’s times in the 2010/2011 season.
Milan has the simplest task a priori, a point will suffice against a Sassuolo that no longer asks for anything more from its championship. Despite this, one should not underestimate this young team that has obtained surprising results during the year, such as the victory in the first leg at home to the leaders. A tie will be enough to lift the trophy for the team led spiritually by Zlatan Ibrahimovicwho although he was unable to contribute his football level due to various injuries, managed to transmit the winning mentality to the youngest, who now have to face the most difficult step: becoming champions.
Inter tries to come back
On the other side is Inter, a team that three weeks ago could count on an advantage over the neighboring club but squandered it in the disastrous match in Bologna, a 2-1 loss marked by a colossal mistake of goalkeeper Radu. Hope is still on and the coach underlines it in his recent statements: «There is one game left and I am confident: I have already won a league on the last date when I was two points below». The title to which the former Lazio player refers is the one of the year 1999/2000, when with a 3-0 victory against Reggina, they took the opportunity to overcome a Juventus team that at that time was lost in the rain in Perugia. The last game will face the ‘Neroazzurri’ to Sampdoria, a team that on the previous day reached the permanence in Serie A and that he will have no reason to stand in Inter’s way to victory.
Precedents say that of the six previous occasions in which a similar situation was experienced, only twice the comeback has been completed: with Juventus in 2001/2002 and with the example cited above. The clash between the two Milan teams will determine whether Milan will catch up with their ‘cousins’ with the same number of titles or the opening of a new domain interista, which would mean the second star on his shield, by winning his twentieth league.
