The Italian Dream: Women’s Gymnastics Team’s Journey to the Bronze Medal at the World Championships 2023

Italy has seriously cherished the dream of winning the bronze medal in the women’s team competition at the World Championships 2023 of artistic gymnastics. Our national team had the ball in their hands at the entrance to the stadiumlast rotation on uneven bars, a widely favorable tool and where the Fairies usually give their best. In fact the Italians were engaged in a head-to-head match with Franceon the very treacherous beam and with six tenths of an advantage.

The second exercise is that of the absolute specialist on the stands, that is Alice D’Amato. The European Specialty Champion performs a good performance until the final bars, when she misses the hold with the high bar. The Genoese she falls as she had already done in the preliminary round and so the girls of DT Enrico Casella say goodbye to their dreams of glory. An error on the part of the captain which took a large point off the team total.

Just looking at the rankings is enough to have huge regrets. Italy finished in fifth place with an overall score of 162.997. France took the bronze medal with 164.064. The Fates, following China (163.162, which collapsed on vault as predicted after two superb rotations between bars and beam), remained off the podium by 1.067 points. The exercise completed without falling by Alice was really enough to party like four years ago in Stuttgart.

Italy, which was fifth again last year with five falls in a crazy race and in which Canada’s 160.5 was enough to put a laurel around its neck (tonight three and a half more points were needed…) , he reiterated once again that he is among the big planetaries in the team event and will present itself at the 2024 Paris Olympics with great ambitionshoping to recover all the members (Alice D’Amato, Giorgia Villa, Martina Maggio and Vanessa Ferrari were absent in Antwerp).

Tonight, however, we go back to sleep with some regrets, because very little was needed to complete the perfect race. The Italians made the country dream once again in the competition that evaluates the quality of the gymnastic movement of an entire nation and which has become increasingly popular with us: bronze at the 2019 World Championships, fourth place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, fifth at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, European Champions in 2022 and continental silver in 2023.

THE REPORT OF THE ITALY RACE

Italy opened the competition with an excellent rotation on the beam: Elisa Iorio broke the ice with personalities (13,500), Manila Esposito he raised the bar with a superb 14.133 (5.9 D Score, it would have been the third score in qualifying…), Angela Andreoli he gritted his teeth with an exercise that was simplified by his standards (13.033, 5.2). The Italian quintet also handled the floor exercise well: Esposito’s thrust is classy (13.633), Alice D’Amato she left the platform but still brought home a 13.300, Arianna Belardelli he didn’t feel the weight of the first world championship final and obtained a valid 13.133.

Halfway through the competition, Italy dreams big and knows very well that on vault they can fly high and chase medals. Double twist by D’Amato (14.166) and Belardelli (13.766), half twist by Esposito (13.700). The Italians are thus six tenths behind France and 1.7 points from China: Transalpine on beam, Asian on vault where they are weak. Everything is played on parallel bars. Manila Esposito opens with 13,400, D’Amato’s thrilling exercise is needed to overcome France but the 20 year old falls and stops at 13,200 (starting from 6.0, it would have been a comfortable 14,400 without that error). She does not serve Elisa Iorio’s valid 14.033 final (6.2 the starting note).

THE TRIUMPH OF SIMONE BILES’ USA. BRAZIL AND FRANCE ON THE PODIUM

The USA confirmed themselves as World Champions for the seventh consecutive time. This time on stage there was the phenomenal Simone Biles, who performed four exercises bordering on the surreal: 14.800 on vault (she didn’t do the Yurchenko double pike), 14.466 on the bars (6.0), 14.300 on the beam (6.0), masterful 15.166 on the floor exercise (6.7) with four acrobatic diagonals perfectly stopped. The Magnesium Powder Queen was joined on the floor by Skye Blakely, Shilese Jones and Leanne Wong, while Joscelyn Roberson did not take to the floor: final score of 167.729, the only error being Leanne Wong’s fall on the beam (11.700).

The Brazil of an amazing Rebeca Andrade (14.900, 14.400, 13.133, 14.666) and a magical Flavia Saraiva (13.833, 13.733, 14.066, 13.900) he won a historic silver medal with a total of 165.530. France completed the podium (164.064) dragged by an overflowing Melanie De Jesus Dos Santos, who today behaved like a true captain (14.400, 14.400, 14.000, 13.700). There Great Britain, European Champion and world silver medalist eleven months ago, was credited for second place but were hurt by the falls of Jessica Gadirova on vault and those of Georgia-Mae Fenton on beam and parallel bars: sixth place with 161.864. Never competing were the Netherlands (159,563) and Japan (157,496).
