The Italian builder of the Bayesian asks the shipowner for huge compensation for damage to its image

The builders of the Bayesian are asking for a huge compensation from the shipowner. A compensation of 222 million euros for the sinking of the British-flagged yacht that sank at dawn on August 19 in front of the port of Porticello, causing the death of seven people, including the English tycoon Mike Lynch. The request is being made by The Italian Sea Group, led by the entrepreneur Giovanni Costantino who, in 2021, had acquired the Perini Navi brand, saving it from bankruptcy. The company, listed on the stock exchange, now owns the assets of the Viareggio shipyard that, in 2008, built the 56-meter long sailing ship with a 75-meter aluminum mainmast, the tallest of its kind in the world.

The Giornale di Sicilia writes this, reconstructing the story linked to the maxi compensation. The Tisg group has instructed the law firm BdPmarine&law, represented by the lawyer Tommaso Bertuccelli, to start legal action at the Court of Termini Imerese, asking for just over 222 million euros for damages to its image linked to the sinking of the highly valuable yacht, which until then had been defined as “unsinkable”. The parties to the lawsuit would be Revtom Limited, based in the Isle of Man, formally managed by Angela Bacares, Lynch’s widow, who would therefore represent the owner and the property of the Bayesian responsible under the navigation code for the damage caused by the crew, and the global operators of luxury yachting, Camper & Nicholsons International, who were entrusted with the task of managing the vessel who – according to the lawyers of TISG – would have selected a captain who was not up to the task of governing such a technologically advanced yacht. Also being sued are the three crew members who have been investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office for multiple manslaughter and negligent shipwreck, namely the New Zealand captain James Cutfield, the engineer officer Tim Parker Eaton and the sailor Matthew Griffith who was on watch on the bridge the night of the tragedy. The impact of the disaster would not have been limited exclusively to the dramatic loss of human lives and the destruction of a boat considered one of the international “jewels” of pleasure sailing, but would have also caused damage to the image of the company that built the mega yacht.

The Lynch family, according to some English newspapers, is “very sorry” about the request for huge compensation by the Italian Sea Group.
The Lynch family, contacted by ANSA, said they will refrain from making any official statement to the press, whether local or international.
Meanwhile, the bodies of 59-year-old British businessman Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who died in the shipwreck along with four other passengers and a crew member, have been returned to their families in the UK and a date is awaited for when their funeral should be set.
