A much bigger problem is created by the water supply systems of Varvara, Ahtopol and Sinemorets – there the waste water is not purified
The pipes exposed from under the sand on the beaches of Kiten are not for waste water, but for drainage. Their role is to drain rainwater into the sea below the sandbar, the several inspections carried out so far by the local waterworks and the municipality have found. On Thursday, September 7, the mayor of Tsarevo, Georgi Lapchev, also denied the spreading rumors that the torrential rains, which carried away some of the sand on the beaches, exposed pipes that serve,
to discharge the sewage directly into the sea
Rumors started first on Facebook, where local citizens posted photos of plastic pipes torn apart by the elements and scattered indiscriminately on the beach and around it on September 6. They claim that these are hidden illegal waste pipes and even that they caused the excessive Escherichia coli pollution, which was reported a month ago by the “Active Consumers” Association.
The next day – September 7, the photos were shown in the morning block of bTV of two former ministers of the environment and water – Emil Dimitrov and Borislav Sandov. Both
practically confirmed this thesis
Emil Dimitrov stated that “this is actually a deep-water discharge, which in this case is shallow-water. This is why there are certain measurements that show a high level of Escherichia coli. People did not know that there is a pipe 50 meters into the sea”.
“On the Southern Black Sea coast, there are no sewage treatment plants in all places and well-organized sewage, and they do not want to look for one. While I was a minister, none of the municipalities submitted documents to receive funding to build such a station”, said Borislav Sandov for his part.
Throughout the day after that, social networks repeated the “truth” that the elements had finally revealed how the faecal waters were pouring directly into the sea, and in the area of the beaches. Actually
Tsarevo has a sewage treatment plant
and the waste water processed therein discharges 1 mile inland into the sea.
Ironically, the city’s sewage system has actually suffered from the heavy rains – there is a broken pipe under one of the bridges. According to the data of the local eco-inspection, the pipe was placed there legally and within 10 days it will have to be connected to the network again.
“In principle, the situation should be examined in detail, but those in the photos are definitely drainage pipes,” Ivan Ivanov, chairman of the Bulgarian Water Association, told “24 Chasa”.
He explained that, in principle, in Bulgaria, city sewers are of a mixed type – both fecal water and water collected from rain collectors flow through their pipes. One of the few places where this is not the case are the Black Sea beaches. Almost everywhere, especially where the terrain near the sandbar is sloping, drainage pipes are buried under the sand. Otherwise, the water that fell from the rains
it will have to drain through the beach itself into the sea
According to him, the water supply systems in Sinemorets, Varvara and Ahtopol represent a much bigger problem, since they do not have wastewater treatment plants at all. The reason is that they have less than 10,000 inhabitants, and the last European funding for the moment was intended only for settlements with more than 10,000 permanent inhabitants.
