Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Representative Fadi Alama, believes that “the issue of the new Syrian displacement is very dangerous, especially in terms of what we heard in the committee’s meeting yesterday that there were 8,000 displaced people in August who entered through the illegal borders into Lebanon, and the army and public security knew about them.”
Alama said in an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”: “Yesterday, in the presence of the Ministers of Social Affairs and the Displaced, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the responsible officers in the army, the Internal Security Forces and Public Security, in addition to fellow deputies and some departments concerned with the displacement file, we agreed to activate the basic central committee for the displacement file, and it is assumed that Tomorrow, in its session, the government will discuss the issue of border control and combating the illegal infiltration of the displaced Syrians by activating the work of the committee and determining who will chair it, provided that this committee begins its work and meetings with the Syrian government and with the references concerned in this file.
And he warns of “the new wave of displacement, because Lebanon suffers from the problem of smuggling, and the security forces are aware of the smugglers, but unfortunately, strict measures have not been taken against them, and this leads to them going again to illegal crossings and carrying out smuggling operations, so if things remain like this in light of the economic crisis.” The situation in Syria will be dangerous and frightening.”
He explains, “The Lebanese army and the director of intelligence explained to us the difficulties and challenges they face at the borders, and this is a very sensitive matter, and we hope that a decision will be taken tomorrow to activate the work of the central committee and its plan of action, provided that its members are confirmed in order for us to reach a conclusion, because the main issue today is how to manage this.” file”.
Alama stresses that “what is required is a political support for the security forces, who are making a tremendous effort within the available capabilities, and activating the agreements between Lebanon and Syria to solve this issue.”
