The ISSP Gallery will host an exhibition dedicated to photo books

From June 1 to July 1, the ISSP Gallery will host an exhibition of “Self Publish Riga” photo books – one of the main events of the Riga Photo Month, organized by the ISSP association for the fifth time.

According to the representatives of the association, “Delfi” informs, the exposition will consist of about 150 diverse editions, as well as the installation “Glass Stretches in a Few Words” created especially for this event.

At a time when travel opportunities have become limited, the “Self Publish Riga” exhibition at the ISSP Gallery this year will allow you to travel around the world from Strenči to Congo with the help of books, the organizers write.

The exhibition will feature about 150 photo editions, including winners of prestigious competitions and unpublished, hand-crafted books from various countries.
The exhibition will provide an opportunity to see together the last year’s finalists of the world’s most important photo book competition “Paris Photo – Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards”, including two editions by Latvian authors – the book “Flower Smuggler” by the artist Diana Tamane and the artist group The publication “Stikla Strenči” created by Orbīta “in cooperation with the Latvian Museum of Photography, which also won the title of” Historical Book of the Year 2020 “at the Arla Photography Festival” Les Rencontres d’Arles “and the Latvian Book Publishers’ Association competition” Golden Apple Tree ” The most beautiful art edition “.

The exhibition “Self Publish Riga” will also feature selections of photo books from the collections of “Africa in the Photobook” (curator – Ben Krevinkel) and “Nordic Dummy Award” (curators – Antonio Kataldo and Adria Žulia), Latvia (curator – Evita Goze), Lithuania (curator – Paulius Petraitis) and Estonia (curator – Kulla Lasa) the most interesting photo books of recent years, as well as the best works submitted to the “Self Publish Riga 2021” photo book model competition and an installation created especially for this exhibition.

The installation “Glass Strenči in a Few Words” by editor Anna Volkova and designer Alexei Murashko focuses on the interaction of image and text in a photo archive. “To facilitate the search for images in catalogs, the archives use keywords and texts that briefly describe the content of the images. The exhibition uses descriptions of the images in the National Museum Collection and the structure and images of the Latvian Museum of Photography’s Strenči photo workshop,” explains Volkova.

The winners of this year’s “Self Publish Riga 2021” photo book layout competition will also be announced during the exhibition. The main prize of the competition is the opportunity to create an exhibition at the ISSP Gallery during the next “Self Publish Riga”, but the author of the best Baltic self-published photo book will receive 500 euros for printing and framing services from the exhibition sponsor.
