President Andrés Manuel López Obrador left education in the hands of a communist group from the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), which has nothing humanist and that is irresponsible, says Father Mario Ángel Flores Ramos, former rector of the Pontifical University of Mexico and current director of the National Observatory of the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (CEM).
“The President handed over the most delicate thing for all of society, which is education, to a radical group of Marxists. What is not realizing what he is doing? There are so many groups within the current government, but how was it possible for him to give these, the most unpresentable group, education? The most sacred, the most important and transcendental for a society. That is inexcusable for whoever is in charge of this country!”, he pointed out in an interview with EL UNIVERSAL.
He assures that the director of Educational Materials of the SEP, Marx Arriaga Navarro, does not have enough experience to have been in charge of creating the new textbooks.

“He is not a suitable person to have been the great editor of texts for the formation of children and adolescents. He nowhere has that resume. And he hired a Venezuelan [Sady Arturo Loaiza Escalona], who was in charge of some educational processes working for the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. Nor was he the right person to take charge of something as important in our country as the production of free textbooks”, he says.
“How have you seen the Secretary of Education in the face of all this controversy?”, he is asked.
“Unfortunately, she is not the one making the decisions, she is not the Secretary of Public Education, simply. She is placed in a position where she is not allowed to act. When she arrived at that position, the process for the elaboration of the books was already underway. She hasn’t intervened at all. She should raise her voice because she is put in charge of public education, not the one who does the dirty work for other characters. Maybe it’s what she doesn’t understand, because we haven’t seen her act, ”she replies.
He says that it is absolutely irresponsible that even though the government only has a little more than a year left in power, it is presenting the so-called New Mexican School, which has neither head nor tail.
“This is a government that is on its way out and that no one wants it anymore, but it occurs to it to come up with a new educational strategy that lacks study plans, that has not trained teachers. This is a true irresponsibility that we must not allow ”, he mentions.
Ramos Flores considers that the new free textbooks, which will be delivered at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year to more than 25 million basic education students, have generated widespread discomfort for having been carried out on the margins of society.
“This discomfort has been growing due to the way this government does things, which does everything outside of society. And only managing his own ideology and also, with the power he has, safeguarding all the information related to the study plans and programs, as well as the free textbooks for five years. This is unacceptable, ”he opines.
For Father Mario Ángel, the controversy that the copies have unleashed is such that even some teachers have already begun to demonstrate against this new educational model, which will be implemented as of next August 28.
“The teachers had remained silent because, of course, they were afraid of being fired, but seeing that the protests by academics, parent organizations, and civil society have been growing, they have already begun. to react by expressing their opinions on those books, although, yes, the big teacher unions have preferred to remain silent ”, adds the priest.
It ensures that the center of education must be the person, in this case children and adolescents, for which reason it urges the federal government to reach agreements for the benefit of society.

“We cannot put an ideology in place of the person, because we are already beginning to make the whole process wrong. The government is not the owner of education, it is the coordinator of society to offer the best to children, young people and adolescents ”, she adds.
The cleric, with more than 40 years in priestly service, points out that the federal government is closed to listen to those who have spoken out against the new free textbooks, for which reason he considers it necessary to resort to the Judiciary.
“When there is that closure, when there is no listening, when there is no dialogue, the Judiciary remains as a necessary resource to create that environment for dialogue that we need,” he says.
