Dresden wanted to try something new in terms of sport in 2022. However, the event caused more costs than revenue – the Ironman disaster.
Thousands of people all over the world take part in the Ironman every year. The triathlon takes place on all continents, and Germany has also been organizing such a competition in Frankfurt am Main for more than twenty years. In addition to the city in Hesse, Dresden has also wanted to host an Ironman since last year – and has canceled it again for the future.
In the Ironman, men and women traditionally compete against each other in separate groups in the disciplines of swimming, cycling and marathons. Months of training and preparation – especially with regard to the equipment – are the prerequisite for many participants to take part in the triathlon.
Ironman already had starting difficulties in 2022
After last year’s competition could not take place as originally planned, it is completely canceled this year. In 2022, the Ironman had to be postponed due to a lack of approval for the bike course, as the “Saxon” writes. As a result, instead of the planned 2,500 participants, only 430 athletes competed.
It was already clear in winter that the triathlon in Dresden would also be canceled this year. A red information box on the Ironman 70.3 Dresden website states that the event will not take place in Saxony, but that they are looking forward to further cooperation “in the near future”.
As the “Sächsische” reports, the event for 2024 has finally been canceled. Mayor Dirk Hilbert also announced: “With the cancellation of the Ironman triathlon for the years 2023 and 2024, the entitlement to the earmarked funds in both years also lapses.” That is an advertising budget of 300,000 euros.
Alternatives in Brandenburg, NRW and Baden-Württemberg
A discussion arose about what should happen with the money instead. Outcome: The city collects almost all of the budget for the budget freeze, but it could be used for another sporting event.
The website of the Dresden Ironman still advertises the “breathtaking” backdrop of the city in front of which the triathletes would have competed against each other. Instead, it is now necessary to switch to other places such as Kraichgau, Duisburg or Erkner, the information box explains.
