Ooty ∙ One of the children died after consuming iron folic acid tablets distributed in the school. 3 people are undergoing treatment in the hospital. 4 people including the headmaster were suspended in the incident.
Jayanaba Fatima (13), a student of Class 8 of Urdu School in Ooty Kanthal, died. The children were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College after taking the pill after betting. Jaynaba Fatima died while being taken to Chennai for specialist treatment. Between 30 and 40 tablets were ingested by the children.
The tablets are distributed free of charge by the government through schools to prevent anemia in children. An investigation is underway into whether these came into the hands of the children from the headmaster’s room. Headmaster Muhammad Amin, teacher Kalaivani and health department employees Nagamani and Jayalakshmi were suspended.
