After moving into the Europa League, the Alte Försterei turned into a party mile. The overjoyed pros of 1. FC Union Berlin celebrated the greatest success in the club’s history from the “Europe Balcony” with the elated supporters at their feet. “I can tell you the mood: you have to pinch yourself to believe it,” said manager Oliver Ruhnert (50).
Eleventh in the promotion season, seventh in the second year in the Bundesliga and now fifth. Only FC Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and RB Leipzig were better. “We’re playing fucking EUROPA LEAGUE,” wrote the club on Twitter.
The jubilation: It knew no bounds. The prospects: By reaching the Europa League, Union will also be promoted to a new financial league. The exact premium figures for the coming season are not yet known. Last year, the 32 clubs received €3.63 million in entry fees in the group phase.
There was 630,000 euros for a win, 210,000 for a draw. The group winner received 1.1 million euros, the runners-up 550,000 each. There was more money for the other rounds, including 2.8 million for participation in the semi-finals and 4.6 million for entering the final. The winner, in this case Eintracht Frankfurt or Glasgow Rangers, can look forward to a further 4 million euros.
The timetable: The players are now on vacation until June 20th. Then the preparations for the busy new season begin. The Bundesliga season begins on August 5th DFB Cup already between July 29th and August 1st. In terms of the Europa League, the draw is on August 26th. The first day of the group phase is September 8, 2022. And Union Berlin is there.
