On Friday (9/23/2022), the state thwarted the anti-government demonstrations by organizing counter-demonstrations in several cities, as reported by Reuters.

On Saturday (9/24/2022), state media quoted Raisi as saying Iran should take firm action against those who oppose the country’s security and tranquility.

Raisi reported this on the phone with the family of a member of the Basij volunteer force who was killed during the riots in the city of Mashhad.

“(The president) stressed the need to distinguish between protest and disturbance of public order and security and called the event a riot,” state media reported.

The protests began on September 16 when Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman, was pronounced dead.

Mahsa Amini was previously arrested for failing to properly cover her hair and head using a veil.

Mahsa Amini’s death has reignited anger over issues including restrictions on personal freedoms in Iran, a strict dress code for women, and an economy teetering with sanctions.

During the protest, some women burned their veils in public. Some women even cut their hair openly.

The Iranian news agency reported Saturday that 739 protesters were arrested in Gilan province.

The Twitter account of activist @ 1500tasvir, which has 125,000 followers, reported that communication lines with the city of Oshnavieh have been cut, and landlines have also been cut.

Oshnavieh is one of several cities in northwestern Iran that has also been shaken by protests.
