Since last year, users can recharge their Navigo pass with an iPhone using NFC. After years of waiting, tourists and Ile-de-France residents will finally be able to use the public transport Navigo card with Apple Pay on their iPhone and Apple Watch from 2023.
Indeed, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) – the regional authority in charge of transport – and Apple have finally reached an agreement after several years of negotiations. “We cannot give a precise date yet, because it depends on the progress of the developments carried out by Apple in Cupertino. But this time, for sure, it will happen”, said Laurent Probst, Managing Director of Île-de-France Mobilités, with the Parisian.
A test phase will take place this year with compatible iPhones and Apple Watches. Then, these devices can replace the plastic cards distributed by IDFM, such as the Navigo pass, and the Comutitres organization. From 2024, all transport tickets can be purchased directly with Apple Pay and integrated into the Cards app (formerly known as Wallet).
This contract with Île-de-France Mobilités and Apple is valid for five years and provides for a budget of 5 million euros dedicated to the development of these new services.
