Back to school and the month of September are synonymous with back to school for parents and children, but it also marks the upcoming arrival of the new iPhones. What sauce will we be eaten in?
The wait has been long since the release of the iPhone 15, but it is slowly coming to an end. In a little less than a month, Apple should lift the veil on its new flagship smartphones, and provide answers to a WWDC rich in new features for iOS 18. The iPhone 16, according to all the rumors, should indeed be the ideal device to support Apple’s new artificial intelligence.
But aside from this important new feature, how will the iPhone 16 differ from its predecessor? The iPhone 15 was successful in many ways, bringing major new features compared to the iPhone 14, but there is no indication at the moment that this will be the case with the iPhone 16. Regardless, let’s take a look, model by model, at the expected new features.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: a photo block reminiscent of that of the iPhone X
One of the first things that will really set the iPhone 16 apart from its predecessor is the design of its rear panel. Until now, traditional iPhones were very close to the Pro models, with a similar square camera block. Apple would like to further differentiate the high-end from the mid-range with, on the latter, a pill-shaped photo sensoras could be found on the iPhone X in 2017. This new layout would offer a slight visual renewal, but would also allow the capture of space videos on standard iPhone 16s, a feature previously reserved for iPhone Pros.
While we don’t expect any changes in terms of photography, with the same sensors as on the iPhone 15, it’s on the power side of the device that Apple will go all out. Indeed, the basic iPhone 16 should be equipped with the A18 chipdesigned based on Apple Intelligence. A move to 8Go the RAM and a more advanced Neural Engine for Apple’s AI.
Back to the design, since Apple is reportedly considering importing the new bouton Action iPhone 15 Pro models on all of its 2024 iPhones, and to add a new bouton Capture to make taking pictures easier.
On the iPhone 16, the battery would be more significant than last year, since it would go from 3,349 mAh on the iPhone 15 to a battery of 3.561 mAh. On the other hand, the iPhone 16 Plus would have a less powerful battery than a year ago: 4.006 mAh (iPhone 16 Plus) versus 4,383 mAh (iPhone 15 Plus). This is said to be due to better power management and a more energy-efficient A18 chip.
Finally, in terms of colors, Apple would go from five colors to six, with a purple iPhone 16which would be added to the black, blue, pink, green and yellow of the iPhone 15.
iPhone 16 Pro: an A18 Pro chip for AI
Here, don’t expect any changes in terms of design. Apple would start again on the same bases established a few years ago, but would make some minor changes here and there. The first, which is probably the most important, is the move to a from 6.3″ OLEDcompared to 6.1″ previously. A nice increase in size, which would offer increased comfort of use for customers. The material used for the chassis of the iPhone, titanium, would also benefit from a new manufacturing process improving its resistance.
Apple is also said to be using the process Border Reduction Structure to further reduce the size of the screen borders and allowing (finally?) to move to 1.2mm borders. An increase in screen brightness would also be in the pipeline, with a screen that would be able to reach a 2,600 nits peakThe previously mentioned Capture button would also be making its arrival.
The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to look exactly like the iPhone 15 Pro.
Battery-wise, the iPhone 16 Pro should allow for even greater battery life, enabled by both an improved chip and a larger battery due to the increased size of the device. This larger battery would finally recharge much faster thanks to the arrival of 40W power adapters and the introduction of 20W wireless charging.
In terms of power, the iPhone 16 Pro would be equipped with a new A18 Pro, much more powerful than its predecessor and even more dedicated to Apple’s AI, which will work locally and will require very high computing power. The new 5G modem, supplied by Qualcomm, would be part of it and meets the standard “5G Advanced” offering a much higher internet speed. It would be reserved for the Pro models.
Finally, the iPhone 16 Pro would inherit the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s ability to take pictures thanks to a 5x optical zoom. It would also be equipped with the latest generation of Sony sensors, improving low-light photography, as well as a 48MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. In addition, the odious lens flarethis halo that appears when taking a photo under the sun, would be reduced thanks to the coating Atomic Layer Deposition sensors.
In terms of colors, the iPhone 16 Pro Titanium Blue would give way to an iPhone 16 Pro Titanium Pink for the female audience.
iPhone 16 Pro Max: the biggest battery ever seen on an iPhone
Let’s keep it simple: the iPhone 16 Pro Max should benefit from the same improvements as the iPhone 16 Pro. New processor, thinner edges, Capture button. The differentiation between the two devices should be less marked than between the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Like the iPhone 16 Pro, the Pro Max will get a size gain from 6.7″ to 6.9″. It is now close to 7″ diagonally, a threshold that Apple apparently does not want to cross. The screen is also said to be brighter.
For now, it’s hard to say whether the iPhone 16 Pro Max will benefit from a more powerful optical zoom than the iPhone 15 Pro Max and whether the photo sensors will be more advanced than those of the iPhone 16 Pro. On the other hand, if there is one point on which it will differentiate itself from its little brother, it is on the battery. The iPhone 16 Pro Max should be equipped with the largest battery ever seen on an iPhone, approaching 5,000 mAh of power. This would reach a battery of 4,676 mAh, compared to 4,422 mAh last year.
What about the prices?
Last year, Apple surprised the world by announcing that the new iPhone 15s would be sold cheaper than the iPhone 14s, while all the rumors announced the opposite. It is therefore a daring bet to guess on the prices of the new iPhone 16s, and it would be wiser to wait for Apple’s official announcement.
What is certain is that two scenarios are possible: either Apple decides to absorb the increase in production costs and not pass it on to customers (as it did last year), or it will have no other choice but to pass this increase on to the customer’s purchase invoice.
