Apple’s next-gen iPhone hasn’t even been announced yet, but some Apple fans are already lamenting the fact that it might be called the iPhone 13. According to a SellCell survey of roughly 3,000 iPhone users, nearly 20% of those surveyed indicated that the iPhone 13 could turn them off due to the superstitious nature of the number 13.
It’s essentially a bit of popular folklore at this point, but the number 13 has historically been considered unfortunate in various countries and cultures. For this same reason, you may have noticed that some tall buildings and hotels do not have a designated 13th floor and instead label the 13th floor as the 14th.

So what should we get out of this survey?
Honestly, not too much.
Paint me pessimistic, but the idea that calling Apple’s next-gen iPhone iPhone 13 will have a perceptible impact on sales seems completely fanciful. And given the nature of human psychology, I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the people who said the iPhone 13 name might put a pause on them were prepared by the question itself that said, ‘Could you name Apple’s next smartphone? ‘iPhone 13’ as the number 13 can be considered unlucky? «
It is essentially an important question and I suppose the result would have been very different if the question had been phrased this way: “Would you hesitate to buy a device called the iPhone 13?”
Interestingly, some Apple fans, even before the survey was released, have said that the next-gen iPhone should be called the iPhone 14, or perhaps more simply, the iPhone. Truth be told, this argument is a bit silly to me. Apple has a long history with its iPhone naming structure, and while the company shouldn’t blindly adhere to it, deviating from it due to a somewhat obscure superstition seems reckless.
According to the survey, respondents came up with all kinds of ideas about what Apple’s next-generation iPhone should be called. While 26% said it should be called iPhone 13, a whopping 38% said it should be called iPhone (2021). Meanwhile, 7% of respondents said that Apple should drop the name of the iPhone 13 and instead call it iPhone 14. And lastly, and perhaps to illustrate why some surveys should not be taken seriously, 16% of Respondents said Apple should call its next-gen smartphone the iPhone 21 because it will launch in, wait, 2021.
As for other interesting data from the survey, 64% of respondents said they will wait for the iPhone 13 to launch before considering an upgrade. This should come as no surprise, as most people understandably want to see what new features Apple brings to the table before committing to such a large purchase.
And finally, when asked which iOS 15 features they were most excited about, the most popular choice was Apple’s enhanced wallet app with support for digital ID cards. The next most popular options included the improved Spotlight search, the ability to track lost iPhones even after they’ve been turned off, SharePlay, and the ability to extract text from images.
Here’s a rundown of all the iPhone 13 features that we can expect to see.
