6pm this Monday was of great anxiety for tech enthusiasts who have an iPhone. This is because the stable version of Apple’s latest smartphone operating system has been released: iOS 16.
With that came the much-acclaimed new lock screen. Finally, Apple allows users to customize this screen, which is always welcome, in a “cleaner” system like iOS.
On this new lock screen, you can change the clock font, colors, and add widgets that put certain features and information at your fingertips. Plus, you can add several and switch between them easily.
Apple keeps the limitations in the new iOS 16 lock screen
But in case you have already noticed, it is something that can still improve a lot. Let’s take a very simple example: the clock simply cannot be moved from the top of the screen if you wish. And like the icons we know well from iOS, widgets also have a fixed zone on this lock screen.
It doesn’t matter how big the widgets are. These will line up center or right, although you’d like them better on the left side. As with icons, there is no way to leave gaps between these widgets and they simply redirect you to something.
Remember the camera and flashlight shortcuts that were at the bottom of the lock screen? Well, they are still there and cannot be moved. But even that shouldn’t change in the future.
What will improve is the introduction of “live activity” with third party apps. Once ready, you will be able to access, for example, the result of a football match from the lock screen. And you can also track the arrival of your Uber transport, for example.
