Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters addressed the UN Security Council today at the invitation of Russia and said its invasion of neighboring Ukraine was illegal. At the same time, Waters added that he believed she had been provoked and called for a ceasefire, Reuters reported.
Russia called today’s Security Council meeting to discuss arms supplies to Ukraine and asked the famous British musician to speak. Waters railed against Western arms supplies to Kyiv in a letter posted on his website in September.
US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Richard Mills acknowledged the Briton’s “impressive experience as a contractor”, but pointed out that his qualifications to speak on arms control and European security issues “are less obvious”, BTA reported.
While calling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “illegal,” Waters also said it was “not unprovoked” and condemned “the provocateurs in the strongest possible terms.” He gave no further details. “The only sensible course of action today is to call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine,” Waters said.
Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsia, made a reference to the Pink Floyd hit “Another Brick in the Wall” when he told the Security Council: “How sad it is for his former fans to see how he accepts the role of another brick in the wall – the wall of Russian disinformation and propaganda.”
