The Introduction of Rectilinear Streets in New York: How John Randel Jr. Got It Right

| door Henry Hardcore

Now the city New York about 400 years old, but from 1808 to 1817 they were busy introducing a rectilinear street pattern. Simply because the city was growing and that had to be taken into account. John Randel Jr. got the job done and he didn’t do it wrong at all. Manhattan is busy and densely built, yet the streets are often wide.

Even today, this is useful if, for example, you have a job to do as a moving crew in the Upper East Side of the city and you have to deal with a Karen who makes a fuss because she would not have room to drive past a truck with her pan too thick.

Plenty of room, because John Randel Jr. could apparently look into the future, but the Karen sees it really differently. And then New York solves its problem as we can expect New York to do. You get scolded and then you just do what you have to do. This city never sleeps, so get going with your battery.
