The Internet Surpasses Television as the Primary Medium for Information Consumption

The use of the Internet as the preferred means of information by Andalusians has grown by ten percentage points in the last year, reaching 42.1% of the population, standing just four tenths behind television, which remains in the lead with 42 .5%, followed very far by radio, with 7.6%.

This is confirmed by the Audiovisual Barometer of Andalusia 2022 presented yesterday in Malaga by the president of the Audiovisual Council of Andalusia (CAA), Domi del Postigo, and which has been prepared from 3,025 surveys of people over 16 years of age residing in the community. Del Postigo stressed that the Internet has “gained ground” in recent years as a means of information, to the point that it is practically at the same level as television, with the risks that this entails, since often the contents of websites and networks social are not contrasted, are tendentious or directly hoaxes.

“Almost half of the population is informed through the Internet and the trend is upward,” said Del Postigo, who recalled that the network continues to grow even in “credibility”, so “one should be on guard.”

Where the Internet clearly leads is in the field of leisure: 40.8% of Andalusians use cyberspace for entertainment, compared to 38.5% who opt for television and 6.6% for radio.

The study reveals that daily television consumption decreases almost in the same proportion as Internet use increases. Thus, 87% of the Andalusian population watches television daily and very close are those who say they use the Internet daily (85%). However, only 48% of the people consulted consume radio every day.

People over 55 years of age are the ones who watch television daily to a greater extent (96.6%). On the internet, the percentage of people who claim to use it daily rises to 100% in the case of young people between 16 and 24 years of age, and up to 98.5% in the case of Andalusians between 25 and 44 years of age.

The average daily time that the Andalusian population spends consuming the Internet is 3:28 hours, which means an increase in daily consumption of one hour. For its part, television consumption stood at 2:59 hours and radio consumption at 2:29 hours.

The data also reflects that this consumption habit is marked by age, so that the younger, the more Internet is consumed.

Domi del Postigo has warned, in this sense, that young people between the ages of 16 and 24 connect almost six hours a day to the Internet. “These are the digital natives, one of the great challenges we have is that they do not become digital captives,” she stressed.

And another noteworthy fact: almost 44% of minors begin to use the Internet before they are 8 years old.

The Audiovisual Barometer of Andalusia also reveals that 10.8% of Andalusian parents state that their children do consume pornography on the Internet, a percentage that decreases by more than 5% compared to the data from the previous year.

According to Del Postigo, this could be because parents often don’t acknowledge these facts in a survey, since it has been shown that the consumption of porn by minors is on the rise.

As a novelty in this edition, the report includes a study on the impact on the population of influencers. Most of those surveyed know of its existence and 43% of them follow one. Men and women do it equally.

The issues of greatest interest when following an ‘influencer’ are those related to fashion and beauty, gastronomy, travel, games and topics related to technology.
