Internet Archivewhich offers access to a number of valuable digital collections and digital materials, was this week hit by a series of DDoS attacks which have taken the service out of service. That’s why the site is there currently unavailable.
According to security researcher Troy Hunt, the DDoS attack came just as the Internet Archive was about to publicize a previous breach of its site that led to the theft of more than 31 million records. Hunt, who runs the haveibeenpwned service, said that the timing of both attacks appears to be coincidental and that is likely to be on them multiple perpetrators are involved. “Clearly this is not just one attack,” he wrote.
Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle has been posting updates on the attacks on X, with the latest report saying only that the team trying to get the site up and running again. A DDoS organization known as Blackmeta with the confusing news that the platform belongs to the USA. The Internet Archive is a non-profit organization based in San Francisco that provides free access to an extensive library of software and media and also hosts the Wayback Machine web archive. The report also referenced the stolen records with HIBP linking to Hunt’s haveibeenpwned page, which tracks compromised accounts.
This is not the first time this archive has been targeted by DDoS attacks, but this week’s attacks are for the Internet Archive the latest in a series of inconveniences. Platform is waging a legal battle over copyright to e-books and recently she lost her appeal in the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
