The International Tennis Federation regained control of the Davis Cup

Kosmos, led by former Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, entered the Davis Cup in 2018. The company planned to invest three billion dollars (65 billion crowns) in the competition over 25 years.

She also contributed to the radical change of the Davis Cup. Instead of the four-round format of one team’s home matches spread throughout the year, an 18-team tournament over one week at one venue was introduced after the qualifiers.

The change in format was the target of strong criticism from leading national unions, yet the revolutionary proposal won the necessary two-thirds majority in a vote by delegates at the ITF meeting in 2018. The chairman of the federation, David Haggerty, was also a supporter of the changes.

The ITF has not yet announced a possible return to the original format. This year’s season will start with the February qualification, in which the Czech tennis players will face Portugal. The main part will take place in September and the November play-off will be played in Málaga.
