International Olympic Committee (IOC) is sliding into the abyss along with the whole world, which for several years now, due to various events, has not been able to allow people to live happily.
But let’s talk about sports.
When February 24, 2022 happened between Russia and Ukraine, the IOC immediately took action. Until now, most Russian (and Belarusian) athletes cannot compete. Everything is so confusing that summer athletes do not know whether they will be able to go to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Gradually the ice began to melt, and conversations began about what to do with those who had been suspended. The IOC itself could not solve anything, transferring responsibility to international sports federations. Not everyone decided to go against the system and return Russians and Belarusians (in some places with a flag and anthem, in others in a neutral status).
Head of the IOC Thomas Bach I was dissatisfied that somewhere athletes were being oppressed, not giving them the opportunity to perform. At the same time, he did not speak harshly to anyone about this so that his authority would rise. As a result, exclusion continues along with discrimination. Okay, the flag is not so important, although ardent patriots think otherwise. It is important that the matter is not moving anywhere, despite the fact that everyone understands that the situation in Ukraine will not end in the near future. No matter how hard it may be to admit.
During this time, something similar happened in the world between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Israel and Palestine. Some may allow themselves to say: “How are they different from Russia and Ukraine? Why aren’t athletes from countries that are considered instigators of conflicts banned?” But we won’t. You cannot think in such categories when you need to decide whether sport remains a peaceful territory, where there is no place for political games, or not.
The IOC will never answer this question. Or he definitely won’t while Bach heads the organization. This will not happen in the near future, because he will definitely run for a new term. For this reason, they are already ready to change the Olympic Charter. Therefore, politics and double standards will continue to rule the roost in the Olympic movement.
The organization’s statement on the conflict between Israel and Palestine once again confirmed this.
“The International Olympic Committee adheres to the principle of individual responsibility. Athletes cannot be held responsible for the actions of their governments.
If there are cases of discrimination by an athlete or other official, the IOC will work with the National Olympic Committee and the relevant international federation to ensure prompt action, as was the case during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” an IOC spokesperson told the German news agency DPA.
It turns out that a ban on discrimination is about protection for some people, and about a ban for others. How this happens is an unanswered question. Perhaps Russia really is a bone in the IOC’s throat. Otherwise how to explain everything that is happening?
