The insurance certificate will disappear from the windshield of motorhomes in 2024 – Le Monde du Camping-Car

For almost 40 years, the green sticker has adorned our windshields. This will no longer be the case from April 1, 2024. This is not a joke! This decision aims to save money and reduce ecological costs. A simplification also for motorhome policyholders who will not see their insurance premium decrease.

Who has never forgotten to replace their insurance sticker when the old one was expired? Many French people have been fined while waiting carelessly in the glove box or at home. Because since September 1986, it is imperative to affix the insurance certificate to the windshield so that it is visible from the outside. This is to facilitate checks by law enforcement.

From April 2024

From April 1, 2024, this piece of green paper will disappear for all vehicles registered in France, and in particular for motorhomes. Just like the green card that had to be kept close at hand. The decree relating to its abolition was published in the Official Journal on December 9, 2023.

End of printing and sending

Until now, these proofs of insurance were renewed and sent every year by insurers. “The green card and the insurance badge which have adorned windshields for nearly 40 years, cause the sending of 50 million paper documents each year and are subject to fraud and falsification”, indicates Eric Dupond-Moretti, Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice (in the press release published on the website of the Ministry of the Economy). Stopping printing and sending will allow insurers to make significant savings. It is also a gesture for the planet. According to the government, this represents “a significant ecological cost of nearly 1,200 tonnes of CO2 per year”.

Easy controls

Although this will make life easier for policyholders, their insurance premium will not decrease. And the French will not be fined any less. During checks, law enforcement will have access to the Insured Vehicle File (FVA), which compiles all “third-party” automobile insurance contracts on French territory. “This measure will allow law enforcement to better fight against document fraud and non-insurance of vehicles, explains Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories (still in the press release from the Ministry of the Economy). It will be supplemented in the coming months by the development of the dematerialized driving license.”
