The installation of a digital meter, which currently costs 89 euros, will be free from 1 January. This was decided by the Flemish energy regulator (Vreg).
Now that the capacity tariff is being applied, Vreg wants every consumer to replace their analogue meter with a digital meter as soon as possible in order to know and disseminate their consumption.
The network operator Fluvius is authorized to install the digital meter. If you build or renovate, Fluvius will install it for free. If you decide on your own initiative to install one, for example because of the benefits such a “smart” meter has to offer, you will still have to pay for it. In 2023 this will therefore be free.
Today, around 40% of Flemish households have a digital meter, which is half of the target for the end of 2024. By 2029, everyone should have one.
