“I am one of the Yezidis who fled to the Netherlands before the war due to genocides and persecution at the age of 17. Being a newcomer to a foreign country is a huge challenge in itself. In my home country, Iraq, I was in my last year of secondary school, after which I might have had a chance to start a university study. I say “maybe” because we Yezidis are nowhere safe due to persecutions and genocides and it often ends for them after high school. #Yazidigenocide by Islamic State is just an example.
My father served as an interpreter in the US Army, but was abandoned after the withdrawal from Iraq in 2009-2010. My father then immediately fled to Europe, where we had to go into hiding. I was in hiding for two years. After my father had reached the Netherlands and obtained a residence permit, we were allowed to go to the Netherlands through the family reunification procedure. Also in the Netherlands I had to stay completely isolated in an AZC for a year, without any form of education or education. We got a house after a year and I was finally allowed to go back to school. I was now 18 years old and hoped to continue my dream. After a Dutch course of about 9 months at the ISK/MBO 1, I have worked my Dutch from level 0 to B2.”
