The Inspiring Journey of the Cast of “Champions”: Breaking Taboos and Redefining Disability in Cinema

Leaving a mark in the vast film universe that is released every year is a complicated task. Javier Fesser He did it in 2018 with champions —available on RTVE Play—, an unprecedented film, starring actors with intellectual disabilities. Nine people who made a name for themselves in the heart of Spanish cinema and who surprised everyone with their self-confidence and talent in front of the camera.

That story about friendship, overcoming and diversity, broke the taboo on disability and became a social and cultural phenomenon upon its release. Told openly and with a lot of humor, Fesser not only swept the box office with more than 3 million viewersachieved recognition from the Academy that awarded him three Goyas, including Best Film.

Jesus Vidalrecognized with the Goya for Best Newcomer Actor, demonstrated that talent does not understand social barriers. Both he and his other co-stars revealed that they were well qualified for interpretation, teamwork and acting.

Jesus Vidal

Graduated in Hispanic Philology, he also worked as a journalist, but what he had always been passionate about was theatre, acting and dramaturgy. After training in various performing arts schools, Campeones marked his film debut. His speech, after winning the Goya for Best New Actor, moved Spanish cinema and all viewers. Working with Javier Fesser and demonstrating his talent on camera opened the doors of the seventh art for him.

Despite the obstacles, at 47 years old, he is clear that he wants to interpret the maximum registers possible and that he will fight to continue working in the world of interpretation.

Participating in Fesser’s film changed his life. Although his participation in Fesser’s film was occasional, after the success of the film, Sergio has given several talks in schools to explain his experience and give visibility to disability. Although he does not rule out returning to the big screen, his current life revolves around sports. He plays soccer in the Genuine League, for Rayo Vallecano and works as a gardener in Moratalaz (Madrid). She is also in the cast of Championex.

Gloria Ramos

He was another of the great stars of champions, for whose portrayal of Collantes she was nominated for Best New Actress. From an early age, she was interested in acting, so her parents enrolled her in theater classes at the Down Syndrome Foundation (Down Madrid). In 2020 she acted in another Fesser film, unfortunate stories. She has also participated in Spanish television series such as The one that is comingy Merlin: Sapere aude.

Roberto Chinchilla

Athlete, actor and unstoppable worker. Has been 12 times champion of Spain in high jumpninth in the world in 1,500 meters and fourth in 800 meters and has won five silver medals in 800 meters in championships of the Community of Madrid.

Like her sister, she suffers from Bourneville syndrome, which causes benign brain tumors, but that hasn’t stopped her from pursuing her passion for acting. She is also in the second installment of Champions, which opens in theaters on August 18, 2023.
