The Law 448/2001 established the allowance for workers suffering from thalassemia major and sickle cell disease. Thanks to Law 350/03, this form of subsidy has also been extended to those suffering from thalassemia intermedia or thalassodrepanocytosis. This indemnity represents a form of income support for the taxpayer who is in this specific pathological state.

According to the provisions of the Social Security Institute, in addition to the clinical diagnosis, it is necessary to present certain specific personal and income requirements. Those who can apply for the subsidy are workers who have a contribution seniority of at least 10 years and an age of at least 35 years. On the economic level, however, it must be borne in mind that the indemnity is presented as a form of income support.
This means it can be combined with any type of income or pension. Furthermore, the indemnity is compatible with any other social security benefit and no income limits are envisaged for the payment of the same. In terms of taxation, it is useful to remember that this indemnity is presented as exempt from IRPEF tax. With regard to the presentation of the application, it is recalled the importance of attaching to it all the necessary medical-clinical certification together with the social security one.
