EExtracted this Wednesday morning from the Charleville-Mézières remand center to be taken to the Reims judicial court, as part of the debate on whether or not to extend his pre-trial detention, a prisoner did everything to stay there: the hearing had barely begun when he insulted the judge, then headbutted one of the prison escorts. No lawyer was present, the individual had chosen to come alone to the debate.
Injured in the nose (four days of total incapacity for work), the agent was transported to the University Hospital by the firefighters while the attacker, controlled by the escort with the reinforcement of police officers present at the palace for other reasons, was taken into custody for “contempt of court” et “intentional violence against a law enforcement officer”, indicates the prosecutor of Reims Matthieu Bourrette. In order to avoid any ” conflict of interest “and because of the place of detention of the aggressor, the Reims prosecutor’s office has relinquished responsibility for the benefit of that of Charleville-Mézières which will decide on the action to be taken.
Incarcerated for a criminal matter
Under curatorship, already holder of numerous criminal records, the individual has been imprisoned since his indictment in a criminal case, of a sexual nature according to our information (rape).
The guard whom he head-wounded belongs to the judicial extraction unit (PREJ), a department of the prison administration responsible – as its name suggests – for carrying out the extractions of detainees at the request of the judicial authority. Majority union of the prison administration, the UISP FO Justice Grand-Est reacted this Wednesday afternoon to the attack by publishing a press release which provides details on the facts, confirming those collected by L’union.
“From the start of the interview, the detainee began to behave vindictively, to such an extent that the magistrate [NDLR : une magistrate, juge des libertés et de la détention] asked officers to handcuff him for further hearing. Unfortunately, this did not have the effect of calming the individual, who again allowed himself to adopt a disruptive behavior. Faced with the potentially aggressive risk, the officers undertook to hold the individual by the arms, so that the situation could not degenerate. It was then that the detainee turned towards one of the PREJ officers and gave him a violent head-butt in the face. »
“The shock was so violent”continues the union, “that the officer felt his nose snap, and immediately lost a lot of blood. The assailant was subdued, taken over by the police to be taken into custody, while the colleague was taken to the hospital by the firefighters. »
Union calls for action on Thursday morning
In its press release, the UISP FO Justice Grand-Est indicates “provide full support to the colleague addressed”and say “to expect from the judicial institution a firm and exemplary condemnation for this heinous and gratuitous act”. The case arises in a context where “the PREJs are already suffering”due in particular to insufficient staff in relation to the number of extractions to be carried out, against the backdrop of large working hours, which does not facilitate recruitment.
“This aggression is the last straw”, hammers the union. He calls on all the extraction teams of the interregional directorate of penitentiary services to take their service ” late “ this Thursday morning June 23.
