The initiative’s suggestions – The initiative

New York is a fascinating city! Not only does she never sleep, but she also gives the illusion that anything is possible. It is not surprising, moreover, that it is an important crossroads of world finance and a place of meeting of cultures and of mixing between misery and wealth. New York inevitably inspires the world of arts, cinema, theater and American comics and its universe of Comics with the endless list of superheroes who tirelessly fly to the rescue of the city.

The city is also a source of inspiration for European authors who allow readers to discover the city through a new perspective and stories filled with authenticity. Beyond the artifices and the fantasy, we have chosen a selection of works that describe New York and that deserve to be read:

Giant

Published by Dargaud editions, Giant is the nickname of a man with an imposing physique who works in construction. Behind this austere allure, Giant comes to the aid of Mary Ann, the young widow of one of his colleagues to whom he sends money. The interwar period is an opportunity for the Franco-Canadian Mikaël to tell a story that spans two volumes and which makes us discover the Big Apple from the top of its skyscrapers. Published between 2017 and 2018, the two volumes were respectively awarded the BD RTL Prize in 2017 for the first volume of Giant and for the Prix Albéric-Bourgeois at the BD-Québec festival for volume 2 of Giant in 2019.

Bootblack

After realizing Giant, the cartoonist Mikaël published at Dargaud, the story of Altenberg Ferguson, a young 10-year-old New Yorker, who after losing his parents, becomes a bootblack (shoe shiner) to feed himself. Six years later, he’s hanging out with his friends and he’s in love with Maggie. Al’s gaze is that of a young man from the slums of New York from depression at the end of World War II. The comic was published in two volumes in 2019 and 2020.

Gentlemind

Gentlemind is the story of Navit, a young artist who inherits a charming journal following the death of her wealthy husband. Endowed with a great sense of business, Navit showed the audacity to hoist the magazine among the best magazines of New York during the period of the years 1940 and 1950. The work makes us discover the glitter of the city and allows us to soak up the colors of the city. The first volume is published in 2020 by Dargaud and it is signed by Juan Diaz Canales the screenwriter of Blacksad and Teresa Valero, while Antonio Lapone is in charge of the design.

New York Cannibals

The year is 1990. Officer Azami Tanaka collects a baby she finds in the middle of the garbage as she tries to capture thugs. The young woman who was taken in, who trains hard to keep in shape, does not go unnoticed with her tattoos covering her body. Pavel, his adoptive father, is caught up in his past and the discovery of this baby embarks Azami in an investigation that involves child trafficking and cannibalism. The authors of the comic strip, Jerome Charyn and François Boucq, make us discover New York and its slums. The two authors who have known each other for more than 35 years have already collaborated together and have just published this story on Le Lombard, which is a sequel to Little Tulip that they had published in 2014.
