The inhabitants of the city of Popeşti-Leordeni, terrified of unbearable smells. The Environmental Guard recorded almost 400 reports in a few days. What could be the sources of pollution

For about a week now, the inhabitants of the city of Popeşti-Leordeni in Ilfov County have complained that in the evening the air becomes unbreathable due to pestilential smells. The smell is also felt by the residents of the southern districts of the capital. A resident of the Berceni neighborhood told the G4 that it is not the first time he has smelled this smell. Some evenings this happens or early in the morning, but lately it has become more frequent.

Also for this reason, in recent days, the affected people have submitted 398 reports to the Ilfov Environmental Guard to complain of olfactory discomfort. In a full month, 398 out of 405 reports were registered.

“Once the evening falls, usually around 9pm, there comes a strong smell of sulfur, landfill, sewage, I don’t even know how to describe it. In fact, we have to close the windows because otherwise we can’t breathe,” he said. one of the inhabitants of Popeşti-Leordeni told G4Media.ro.

City hall representatives believe the pestilential smell comes from a controlled source because of this it is only heard in certain intervals of time.

“The idea is that after 9pm, every night, we are hit in this area by a smell that, we are not even aware of, where it could come from. As a measure we contacted those of the National Environmental Guard, we contacted all the relevant authorities. We are trying to understand it. We await the results of the analyzes with great interest, “Alin Todireanu, city manager, Popeşti-Leordeni told TVR.

“At the moment, we are waiting for the results of these measurements to see where we have exceedances and for which pollutants,” said Aurelian Păduraru, Commissioner General of the National Guard for the Environment.

The results would be announced in the next few days. According to the Ilfov Environmental Guard, it carried out several checks on industrial targets in the vicinity of the claimed area. These include: the IMGB platform, the Vidra waste depot, the former Glina waste depot, the Glina treatment plant and the Splaiul Unirii-Galaxy storage sheds.

The Ilfov Environmental Guard would like to clarify that only following the inspection carried out at the Vidra Domestic and Assimilable Waste Deposit, managed by SC ECOSUD SA, for various non-conformities found, it applied a fine for an amount of 100,000 lei.
