The Leon outbreak linked to a study trip to Palma de Mallorca continues to grow. There are already more than a dozen young people infected with another 19 isolated close contacts. The outbreak has already jumped to some of those contacts who had not traveled to the islands, but who have already tested positive. And the reason, according to the Junta de Castilla y León, is that the students who traveled to Palma and were infected there, on their return to León celebrated another party in the province with friends and acquaintances who had not been to the islands. There the outbreak spread.
There are already more than twelve positives and 19 isolated. It is the largest outbreak of all those that have been registered in the Community linked to these study tours. According to the Board, almost all of them were organized by the students in a private way through travel agencies and without having their institutes. Now all are under surveillance, although all positives have mild symptoms.
In addition, Carmen Pacheco, general director of Public Health of the Board, has advanced that there are still two organized trips of students who will return in the next few days to the province. One of them through the Santiago de Compostela airport. All of them will be subjected to sanitary control and isolation as soon as they get off the plane.
This outbreak has contributed to the fact that the province of León presents today the worst data in the entire Community with more than 100 cases of accumulated incidence in 14 days, specifically 103. This Tuesday 66 new positives have been notified. The trend of infections is on the rise again and the situation of León capital and its alfoz is of particular concern, which are the two municipalities with the highest numbers of infections in the entire Community.
For now, this Thursday is ruled out to go down to zero level, that is, to a new normal. The Board is even considering the possibility of mass screening among the youngest age groups, which are now registering the highest rates of infection and transmission of the virus
With regard to vaccination, the province has already exceeded 64% of the population vaccinated with one dose. This week, 52,700 more vaccines have arrived that will focus on advancing the second doses, especially those vaccinated with AstraZeneca who will have the appointment from twelve to ten weeks earlier. The goal is to fully immunize those over 65 as soon as possible.
