Indonesian Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno has stated that Indonesia’s ASEAN Chairmanship will focus on strengthening the country’s tourism potential. The government is aiming to boost domestic tourism while also attracting foreign tourists back to the country post-pandemic. Indonesia has set a target of welcoming 13 million foreign tourists in 2021, with a focus on attracting tourists from ASEAN countries. The government will also be implementing a digitalization strategy to improve the tourism sector’s operations and services. Additionally, the country plans to develop tourism infrastructure, including building tourist villages and improving tourist destinations’ facilities. The implementation of sustainable tourism practices will also be a priority to ensure the industry’s longevity. The Minister stressed the importance of tourism’s role in the country’s economic recovery, with a target of creating 4.5 million jobs in the tourism sector by 2025. The ASEAN Chairmanship of Indonesia is set to run until December 2021.
