The Indonesian Family Behind the Success of Nissin and Monde Nissin

Jakarta

Biscuits and instant noodle products Nissin already familiar in Indonesia. Who would have thought that the owner is a family Indonesia who resides in the Philippines.

Behind the success of Monde Nissin is Henry Soesanto who is now the head of the company. Quoted from Forbes, Henry has assets of US$ 625 million or the equivalent of Rp. 9.3 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 15,000). He is included in the list of the richest people in the Philippines at number 27.

Henry moved to the Philippines 40 years ago. He helped his father-in-law Hidajat Darmono who founded the company in 1979. Then he was entrusted with developing the company in the late 1980s.

In CNN Indonesia’s news, Henry is an alumnus of the Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS). The company has taken the floor on the Philippine stock exchange and managed to earn US$ 1.1 billion in revenue and become the largest IPO in the Philippines.

One of Monde Nissin’s products in the Philippines is Lucky Me! consisting of instant noodles and biscuits and cookies. In 2004, Monde Nissin opened a biscuit factory in Chonburi, Thailand as a step to expand production overseas.

The company continues to grow and become a major player in the local biscuit market offering products such as Voiz Cracker, Voiz Waffle, mini Sumo cakes, An-Pan and Monde cookies.

Previously quoted by CNN Business from the IPO that was carried out, Nissin also plans to increase sales of its instant noodle brand in Asia, which is described as the “core business” of the company itself.

Soesanto explained that even though he has long been the leader in the instant noodle market in the Philippines, research has shown that the consumption of Filipinos in this category is still relatively lower compared to neighboring countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam.

He said that the average consumer there only eats about 36 packs of instant noodles per year, while consumers in Indonesia and Vietnam usually consume around 50 packs.

In the next few years, Soesanto plans to increase the export of his products to existing markets throughout North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, and enter new countries, including Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam.

“We just want to get into consumers. Why don’t some consumers eat noodles? We still see the potential for growth,” said Soesanto.
